How to open a SketchUp file — and get a price for the house
Someone sent you a .skp file, or you drew your future house in SketchUp years ago — and now you want to see it again, show it to your family, or find out what it would cost to build. You do not need SketchUp for that. Here is how to open the file in your browser in about a minute.
Watch: from SketchUp file to a price in one minute
Open your SketchUp file in 3 steps
- Start a free project. Sign in to Geoniks (Google or a sign-in link by email — no password) and choose New project › Upload a CAD / 3D file. In an open project the same is under Import › SketchUp.
- Pick your .skp file. Geoniks reads it in your browser: walls, roofs, decks, furniture, trees and the terrain, with SketchUp's own colours and textures. A big model takes a few seconds.
- Look around the house. Turn it, zoom in on the deck, look from every side — or walk through it. On a phone, one finger turns the house.
Then ask for a price
Press Get a Quote in the editor, choose your country and add the size of the house. A picture of your model goes with the request. Wooden house manufacturers that deliver to your country review it and send you their offer by email or phone. We get back to you within 48 hours. You compare the offers at your own pace; asking is free and without obligation.
Which files open
- SketchUp .skp — files saved in SketchUp 2013 to 2025, as they look in SketchUp.
- AutoCAD DWG / DXF — floor plans become walls, doors and windows, also several storeys (how to open a DWG file).
- IFC from Revit, ArchiCAD and other BIM programs (how to open an IFC file).
- Rhino, FBX, 3DS, OBJ, DAE, glTF / GLB, STL — 3D models.
- Revit, ArchiCAD, PDF or a photo of a sketch — send them to us and we build the house in 3D for you.
If the file does not open
Very old files (before SketchUp 2013) need to be saved again in a newer SketchUp version. You can also export the model from SketchUp as DAE or OBJ (File › Export › 3D Model) and upload that file. Or simply press Send to the Geoniks team in the same window: we rebuild the house and send you the 3D link and the price.
From a SketchUp picture to a buildable house
The SketchUp model is shown exactly as it was drawn. To change rooms, move a door or get a material list and plan drawings, draw Geoniks walls over the model — or tick Also make Geoniks walls when you upload (beta). The walls know what they are built of, so the price and the lists follow every change.
Frequently asked questions
Can I open a SketchUp file without SketchUp?
Yes. Geoniks opens .skp files in the browser: upload the file and the model appears in 3D with its materials, components and terrain. You do not need SketchUp or a licence, and nothing is installed.
Which SketchUp versions can be opened?
Files saved in SketchUp 2013 to 2025. If an older file does not open, save it again in a newer SketchUp version, or export it as DAE or OBJ (File › Export › 3D Model) and upload that file instead.
Is it free?
Opening and viewing your SketchUp file is free with a Geoniks account. Asking wooden house manufacturers for a price is free and without obligation as well.
Can I get a price for the house in my SketchUp file?
Yes. Press Get a Quote, choose your country and add the size of the house. Wooden house manufacturers that deliver to your country review the design and send you their offer. We get back to you within 48 hours.
What if my file does not open?
Send it to us from the same window: our team rebuilds the house in Geoniks and sends you the 3D link and the price. This also works for Revit, ArchiCAD and PDF files — DWG, DXF, IFC and Rhino open directly.
Can I edit the walls of the SketchUp model?
The SketchUp model is shown as it is. To change rooms, doors and windows — and to get material lists and plan drawings — draw Geoniks walls over it, or tick "Also make Geoniks walls" when you upload (beta).
