How to open an IFC file of a house — from Revit, ArchiCAD or any BIM program
Your architect works in Revit or ArchiCAD, and you would like to see the house yourself, change a room or ask wooden house manufacturers what it costs. Ask for an .ifc file — every BIM program can save one — and open it in your browser in about a minute.
Open your IFC file in 3 steps
- Save the model as IFC. In Revit: File › Export › IFC. In ArchiCAD: File › Save As › IFC. Vectorworks, Allplan, BricsCAD and FreeCAD have the same export.
- Upload it to Geoniks. Sign in to Geoniks (Google or a sign-in link by email) and choose New project › Upload a CAD / 3D file — in an open project Import › 3D model / BIM. The file is read in your browser.
- See the house in 3D and finish it. The walls come in with their thickness and height, each storey becomes a floor. Add the doors, windows and the roof in a few clicks — the price and the material list follow.
Then ask for a price
Press Get a Quote, choose your country and send. Wooden house manufacturers that deliver to your country review the design and send you their offer. Asking is free and without obligation.
What comes in from the IFC file
- Walls (IfcWall) as Geoniks walls with their real thickness and height.
- Storeys as floors of the house.
- Floor slabs under the house.
- Doors and windows are not read yet — add them in the editor, or send the file to our team.
Only the house is needed: if the model has a large site, neighbouring buildings or furniture, export just the building (in Revit: a 3D view with only the house visible) for a cleaner result.
Revit or ArchiCAD file, no IFC?
Upload the .rvt, .rfa or .pln file anyway and press Send to the Geoniks team: we build the house in 3D and send you the link and the price. Have an AutoCAD plan instead? See how to open a DWG or DXF file.
Frequently asked questions
What is an IFC file?
IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) is the open file format of building models. Revit, ArchiCAD, Vectorworks, Allplan, BricsCAD and FreeCAD all save it, so it is the easiest way to move a house out of a BIM program.
Can I open an IFC file without Revit or ArchiCAD?
Yes. Geoniks opens .ifc files in the browser, free and without installing anything. The walls come in with their thickness and height, and each storey becomes a floor.
How do I get an IFC file out of Revit or ArchiCAD?
In Revit choose File › Export › IFC. In ArchiCAD choose File › Save As and pick IFC as the file type. Then upload that .ifc file in Geoniks.
Are doors and windows read too?
Not yet — the walls and floors come in, and you add doors and windows in the editor in a few clicks. If you prefer, send the file to our team and we build the complete house for you.
Can I send the Revit file itself?
Yes. Upload the .rvt (or ArchiCAD .pln) file and press Send to the Geoniks team: we build the house in 3D and email you the link and the price within 48 hours.
How do I get a price?
Press Get a Quote in the editor, choose your country and send. Wooden house manufacturers that deliver to your country send you their offer. Free and without obligation.
