Design your own house online, free — a wooden house in 3D, step by step
You know roughly what you want: three bedrooms, a big kitchen, a terrace facing the evening sun — and a house built of wood. You do not need an architect to get the first version on screen, or any software to install. Here is how to design your own wooden house in your browser in an afternoon, and end up with drawings, a material list and real prices.
Design your wooden house in 5 steps
- Start from a wooden house or a blank plot. Open Geoniks and pick a ready-made wooden house that is close to what you want — a cabin, a cottage, a family home — or start with an empty plot and choose how it is built: log, timber frame, post & beam or CLT. The choice sets the wall thickness and the materials from the first click.
- Draw the walls and rooms. Press L and click to draw walls, typing the exact length as you go (
5.2for 5.2 m), or press R to draw a whole room as a rectangle. Rooms get their area automatically, so you see straight away whether the bedroom is 12 or 9 m². - Add doors, windows and the roof. Drop doors and windows onto the walls and slide them into place. Then add the roof over the house — a gable for a classic cabin, a shed roof for a modern one — and a deck or terrace outside.
- Walk through it in 3D. Press Walk and move through the rooms at eye height with W A S D (or the joystick on a phone). This is where you notice that the hallway is too narrow or the window misses the view — and fix it in seconds.
- Get drawings, a material list and quotes. One click gives you a drawing set — dimensioned plans, elevations and sections as PDF and DXF — and a material list. Press Get a Quote: wooden house manufacturers that build in your country price exactly the house you designed.
Why design it as a wooden house from the start
A general home design app draws walls as lines with a colour. For a house you actually want to build, the walls need to be what they will be made of. In Geoniks a log wall is a log wall: it has the thickness of the logs, the corners of a log house and the materials in the list. A timber frame wall has studs, insulation and boards. That is why the drawings and the material list come out right, and why the manufacturers you ask can price the design without redrawing it.
Five tips from people who did it
- Start smaller than you think. Every square metre costs money; a well-planned 110 m² often lives better than a loose 140 m².
- Put the living room where the sun is in the evening and the bedrooms where it is quiet. Turn the house on the plot before you draw the inside.
- Keep the shape simple. A rectangle or an L under one roof is cheaper to build in wood than a house with many corners.
- Walk through it twice — once as yourself, once carrying shopping from the car to the kitchen.
- Ask for quotes on the same design, with the same level of finish, so the offers can be compared.
Already have a plan or a sketch?
You do not have to start from zero. Upload a photo of a hand sketch or your architect’s plan and our team builds it as a 3D wooden house (floor plan to 3D), or open an AutoCAD, SketchUp or IFC file directly (open any house file). Prefer to look first? Browse the ready-made wooden house plans.

Frequently asked questions
Can I really design my own house online for free?
Yes. Geoniks is free for home buyers: drawing the house in 3D, walking through it, the drawing set (PDF and DXF), the material list and asking manufacturers for quotes. You only need a free account so your design is saved.
Do I need CAD experience?
No. Start from a ready-made wooden house and change it, or draw walls by clicking and typing lengths. If you know SketchUp or AutoCAD, the shortcuts will feel familiar: L for walls, R for rectangles, P for push/pull, M to move.
Why a wooden house?
Geoniks is made for wooden houses — log, timber frame, post & beam and CLT. Every wall knows what it is built of, so the wall thickness, the material list and the price follow your design, and the manufacturers you ask build exactly that kind of house.
Can I design a two-storey house?
Yes. Add a floor, draw its walls on top of the ground floor, and place a staircase. The roof sits on the top floor, and the drawings show every level.
Can my architect or builder use the design?
Yes. Download the dimensioned plans and elevations as PDF and the plans as a layered DXF for AutoCAD, or share a 3D link. For the building permit an architect or engineer still prepares the official drawings.
Can I design it by talking to Claude or ChatGPT?
Yes. Connect the Geoniks connector to your AI assistant and describe the house — size, bedrooms, roof — or attach a floor plan. The assistant draws it in Geoniks and gives you the 3D link.
