How to open a DWG or DXF house plan — and get a price for it
You have the floor plan of your future house as an AutoCAD .dwg or .dxf file — from your architect, a house catalogue or your own drawing — and you want to see it in 3D, change it, or find out what it would cost to build as a wooden house. You do not need AutoCAD for that. Here is how, in about a minute.
Open your AutoCAD plan in 3 steps
- Start a free project. Sign in to Geoniks (Google or a sign-in link by email — no password) and choose New project › Upload a CAD / 3D file. In an open project the same is under Import › AutoCAD DWG / DXF.
- Pick your DWG or DXF file. Geoniks reads the wall layers, the doors and the windows, and builds the house in the middle of the plot, sized to the plan. Several files at once become several floors.
- Look at it in 3D and change it. Turn the house, walk through the rooms, move a wall, add the roof, swap a window — the walls are real Geoniks walls, so the price, the drawings and the material list follow every change.
Then ask for a price
Press Get a Quote, choose your country and send. Wooden house manufacturers that deliver to your country — log, timber frame and CLT — review the design and send you their offer by email or phone. You compare the offers at your own pace; asking is free and without obligation.
What Geoniks reads from your drawing
- Walls from the wall layers —
WALL,A-WALLand the same word in other languages (Wand, Mur, Duvar, Parede…) — drawn as two lines or as closed outlines. Both faces become one wall with its real thickness. - Doors from the door layer: a gap in the wall with a door swing, a door block, or jamb lines drawn over a whole wall.
- Windows from the window / glazing layer: a gap with glazing lines, a window block, or glazing drawn over a whole wall.
- Units from the drawing (millimetres, centimetres, metres, inches) — or guessed from the size of the plan.
- Dimensions, text, hatching, furniture and elevations are left out, so only the house comes in.
Tips for the best result
Keep walls, doors and windows on their own layers (A-WALL, A-DOOR, A-GLAZ or similar) and send only the floor plan, not the whole drawing sheet with elevations and sections. For a two-storey house, one file per floor works best.
If the file does not open
Save it as DXF in AutoCAD (Save As › DXF) and upload that file. Or press Send to the Geoniks team in the same window: we build the house in 3D and send you the link and the price within 48 hours. The same works for Revit, ArchiCAD, PDF plans and photos of a sketch — see all file types.
Frequently asked questions
Can I open a DWG file without AutoCAD?
Yes. Geoniks reads AutoCAD DWG and DXF files in the browser — no AutoCAD, no licence and nothing to install. Upload the plan and it opens as a 3D house.
What does Geoniks read from the drawing?
The walls from the wall layers (WALL, A-WALL and the same in other languages) with their thickness, and doors and windows — both openings cut in the wall and door and window symbols drawn over a whole wall. Dimensions, text, hatching and furniture are left out. The units (mm, cm, m, inches) are taken from the file.
Which DWG versions open?
DWG files from current and older AutoCAD versions open directly. If a file does not open, save it as DXF in AutoCAD (Save As › DXF) and upload that — or send it to our team from the same window.
My house has two floors. What do I do?
Upload one file per floor at once (select them together) and confirm which floor each file is — or keep the floors on separate layers in one file; Geoniks recognises floor layers.
Is there a size limit?
DWG files up to about 4.5 MB open directly. For a bigger file, save only the floor plan as DXF, or send the file to our team and we build the house for you.
Does it make the roof too?
A floor plan has no roof, so the house comes in with walls, doors, windows and the floor. Add the roof with the Roof tool in a few clicks, and the price follows.
How do I get a price for the house in my plan?
